Guided tours

THE SQUARES OF ROME
½ - day (3 hours) City SS (on foot) – The Spanish Steps, The Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, Campo De’ Fiori, Piazza Farnese
Departure from the hotel with English speaking guide. You will see the Spanish Steps and the surrounding area with the most exclusive shopping streets such as Via Condotti, Via del Babuino, Via Frattina and Via Borgognona, where Fendi, Gucci, Armani, Valentino, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and others have their boutiques. Continuing through the picturesque streets we will arrive at the Trevi fountain which is perhaps the most famous fountain in the world. If you would like to ensure a return visit to Rome again, you can follow the tradition and throw a coin into the fountain!
Even the magnificently well preserved temple, the Pantheon, will be visited (explanation from the outside unless whispers are ordered). Here you will see the royal tombs, the sarcophagus of the artist Raphael. Perhaps the most impressive things about the Pantheon are its huge dome and the ancient bronze gates which still hang from the original hinges from 123 A.D.
Piazza Navona also called the “Artist’s square” is one of Rome’s most vibrant social centers where Romans and foreigners meet each other. Here you can admire the imposing Bernini fountains and the animated architecture of Borromini’s beautiful facade on the baroque church of Saint Agnes.
At Campo de’ Fiori you will be captivated by the intense atmosphere of the colorful, folkloristic, and active market square where you will feel as if you have stepped back in time. Before entering the market (only mornings and not on Sundays) with its tempting offering of lovely flowers, fruit and vegetables and other food, we will visit the adjacent Piazza Farnese with Giacomo della Porta’s fabulous fountains made from two ancient and huge granite bath tubs from the Baths of Caracalla. The Palazzo Farnese graces the square with its façade – one of the finest examples of renaissance architecture in Rome.
Here the tour finishes - back to the hotel on your own.
All above mention sights will be visited but not necessarily in above order

COLISEUM AND FORUM ROMANUM
½ - day (3 hours) City SS (on foot) – The Capitol, Roman Forum, Coliseum
Departure from the hotel with coach and English speaking guide to the Piazza Venezia where we will see the enormous national monument commonly referred to as the “wedding cake”.
This interesting tour will take us to the heart of the Roman empire.
First of all we will visit the Capitol Hill where the city hall and the Capitoline Museums are situated. The beautiful renaissance palaces were designed by Michelangelo. The equestrian statue of the emperor Marcus Aurelius, located in the center of the square, is the oldest bronze equestrian statue in the world. Beneath the Capitol Hill we will arrive at the Roman Forum where you will be introduced to the center of the Roman empire and briefed regarding the functions of all the different palaces, temples and triumphal arches from 2000 years ago. On the Palatine hill, nestled among the umbrella pine trees on the hill above the Forum, Romulus laid the first stone for Rome’s foundation on the legendary date of April 21st in the year 753 B.C. Centuries later, the Palatine Hill became the site of the sumptuous imperial palaces. The Vestal Virgins, who were entrusted with maintaining the eternal flame in the small, round temple located in the center of the Forum, lived in the adjacent well preserved buildings. In front of the senate building, the “Curia”, you can still see the Rostra, which was the most important speakers platform in the entire empire from where the emperors themselves and the politicians and poets would talk to the Roman people. During the tour you will see pagan temples (some of them since converted to Christian churches), the financial center, the courthouse and the triumphal arches all of which will give you a clear idea about the high level of sophisticated life in the ancient world.
The final highlight of the tour will be a visit to the well kept amphitheater better known today as the Coliseum. Here we finish our tour at 12.30 p.m. Back to the hotel on your own.
